L.C.) small edge bruise and light contact marks, otherwise good very fine £600-700 Footnote William Benson was born at Bassenthwaite, Cumberland, on 1 March 1804, son of Joseph Benson, of Annan, Dumfries, innkeeper and farmer. He was posted as Cornet to the 4th Bengal Light Cavalry on 21 November 1821, and served throughout with that regiment, becoming Lieutenant in March 1823. He was present at the siege and capture of Bhurtpore in January 1826. Promoted to Captain in November 1837, he took part in the campaign on the Sutlej in 1845-46, including the actions at Moodkee, Ferozeshuhur and Sobraon (Medal with 2 clasps). He was made Brevet Major in November 1846, and died at Cawnpore on 28 October 1848.
