CARTOGRAPHY - BLAEU, Joan. Toonneel der steden van de Vereenighde Nederlanden met hare Beschrijvingen, Uytgegeven by -.. [Amsterdam, Joan Blaeu c. 1652]. Large folio. Volume I (Holland). Contemp. richly gold-tooled full overlapping vellum (sl. soiled, minor loss of vellum at the spine edges, front joint split at the spine tail, inner hinges cracked, binding firm), all edges gilt. Name entry on second free endpaper. With gilt-decorated contemp. hand-coloured engraved title page, heightened with gold, with pasted letterpress title as issued, 157 finely contemp. hand-coloured engraved maps, plans and views with explanatory texts on the reverse (incl. 104 double-page, 16 single-page and 37 half-page plates), and 2 engraved (incl. 1 hand-coloured) illustrations in the text. Occasional marginal tears (incl. 5 plates with small tears in the image along the fold) and light creases, several text leaves with vague marginal water stains, explanatory text pages of the last two parts sl. stained due to copper sulphate pigment in the green paint (1 half-page plate affected), overall plates in exceptionally good condition. Complete. Provenance: Acquired in the 19th century by an ancestor of the present owner Notes: The first big step towards his complete cosmography, the Atlas Maior. In the original publisher's binding. Complete, extremely fine hand-colouring, very fresh gold, practically free from the usual imperfections, every city plan a sensational proof of the high point of Dutch cartography in the Golden Age. One of the best copies ever offered of this monumental edition.
