Substantial fragment from a monumental Bihari Qur'an, in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on paper [Sultanate India, late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century] 60 leaves, single column, 15 lines in bold black bihari script, single word 'Allah' in red throughout the text, other key words from the Qur'an highlighted in the margins in red and blue, single illuminated heading in gold against blue, white and gold decorated text panel, one large circular device in blue, gold and red (trimmed along outer margin), two gold roundels marking the verses throughout and remains of damaged marginalia throughout, edges worn and lightly damp-stained with later repairs, tears to text and margins repaired with manuscript facsimile to any loss of text, 520 by 310mm (written space 390 by 200mm.) From a large scale Qur'an once bound in thirty separate Juz’ volumes. The 60 leaves here are from three separate clusters of text, comprising: (1) al-Baqarah (II) verse 143 to Ali 'Imran (III) verse 141 (30 leaves); (2) at-Towbah (IX) verse 107 to Yusuf (XII) verse 50 (12 leaves); and (3) ar-Ra'd (XIII) verse 2 to an-Nahl verse 116 (18 leaves).
