DescriptionProperty from a Belgian Private Collection
Studio of Gillis MostaertHulst circa 1528/9 - 1598 AntwerpChrist on the road to Calvary
oil on panelunframed: 55.8 x 74 cm.; 22 x 29⅛ in.framed: 73.4 x 91.8 cm.; 28⅞ x 36⅛ in.Condition reportThe panel is constructed from 3 horizontal planks, supported on the reverse with block battens. It is uncradled and slightly bowed. It bears the signs of old support which appears to have been removed. The paint surface is otherwise relatively dirty with a discoloured varnish. Discoloured retouching is visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultraviolet is impeded by the thick layer of varnish and reveals small areas of retouching along the joins of the planks, notably upper left and along the bottom. The painting is in overall fairly good condition.
