Stuart, James Ewell Brown ("Jeb")Manuscript letter signed ("J.E.B. Stuart") as CSA general, to Governor Zebulon B. Vance of North Carolina, discussing a fraudulent release of a prisoner
1 1/4 pages (252 x 197 mm) on a sheet of Head Quarters Cavalry Corps, Army of Northern Virginia letterhead, 5 December 1863, docketed on second page.
Stuart responds to a letter from Governor Vance's aide-de-camp, who had inquired too late about the propriety of releasing a prisoner on Stuart's authority:
"I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a letter of the 30th ultimo from your A.D.C. in reference to one Capt. Chas. H. Hord, 1st S.C. Cavalry who presented himself to you with orders purporting to be from me for the delivery to him on one John Minsey, then in jail in Charlotte, N.C. charged with murder, in faith of which authority you caused the delivery to be made.
"I have no knowledge of any such person as Capt. Chas. H. Hord. Such a name does not appear upon the roster of the 1st S.C. Cavalry, nor is there any record of any such authority, having, emanated from me, The case is entirely new to me.
"I have referred your letter to Col. [John L.] Black, 1st S.C. Cavalry for any information he may be able to give upon this subject. There is every reason to believe Hord is an imposter & has been guilty of fraud against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth of N.C. and of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in the Armies of the Confederate States."
