Strutt engraved the plates himself from the illuminated manuscripts in the British Museum and other libraries, through which he tried to show that the manuscript illustrations were informative rather than just decorative. While his works were not a great success in his lifetime, they were influential on nineteenth-century historians of dress and his book on historical games and pastimes (from hunting and hawking to chess, bowling and playing cards) proved popular.
