STRUTT, JOSEPH A set of five illustrated works in 9 volumes, comprising: Þorða Anzel-cynnan: or a compleat view of the manners, customs, arms, habits, &c., of the inhabitants of England, from the arrival of the Saxons till the reign of Henry the Eighth with a short account of the Britons during the government of the Romans. London: Benjamin White, 1775 (vol.3: Walter Shropshire, 1776), 3 volumes, 67+60+30 engraved sepia plates with blank interleaving The chronicle of England. London: Joseph Cooper (vol.2: Thomas Jones for Walter Shropshire, 1777-1778, FIRST EDITION, 2 volumes, 42 engraved plates and maps The regal and ecclesiastical antiquities of England... A new edition (A supplement...). London: for Benjamin and John White 1793 (1792), 72 engraved sepia plates, occasional light foxing A complete view of the dress and habits of the people of England, from the establishment of the Saxons in Britain to the present time. White 1801, FIRST EDITION, coloured frontispiece, 39 engraved plates (some coloured) together 9 volumes, 4to (280 x 221mm.), uniform nineteenth-century green morocco gilt, spines gilt with coloured morocco lettering-pieces, gilt edges, extremities slightly rubbed, some joints repaired A fine collection of some of Strutt's works on historical aspects of England, from costume to card games. Strutt engraved the plates himself from the illuminated manuscripts in the British Museum and other libraries, through which he tried to show that the manuscript illustrations were informative rather than just decorative. While his works were not a great success in his lifetime, they were influential on nineteenth-century historians of dress and his book on historical games and pastimes (from hunting and hawking to chess, bowling and playing cards) proved popular.
