(Some discoloration in volume one on a few text leaves and one plate in the gutter at the head, plate 50 torn across at the fold, affecting image). Original half-vellum, top edges gilt, others uncut; slipcases (some with light chipping and tearing). LIMITED EDITION, one of 360 sets on English hand-made paper. INSCRIBED BY STOKES on fly-leaf in volume one: "'There is much of mysterious interest surrounding the beginning of many of our early American cities, and a very special fascination and charm bound up with the memory of the early struggles, and later triumphs, of our own little island of Manhattan, which make its kaleidoscopic history - to those at least whose ancestors called it their home, and bore a part in its development - more interesting than that of any other city of the New World.'
