Beschreibung:

STIFEL, Michael (ca. 1487-1567). Arithmetica integra . Preface by Philip Melanchthon. Nuremberg: Johann Petreius, 1544. 4 o (189 x 142 mm). Woodcut device on title, numerous woodcut diagrams in text. (Title waterstained with some damage to paper affecting a few letters of imprint, some mildew spotting to preliminaries, dampstaining, final leaf with some stains and corners worn.) Modern vellum. Provenance : Some early calculations on title and marginalia in several early hands; Lasalo Patai (Hungarian inscription on title-page). VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of "one of the most scholarly arithmetics and algebras that came out in Germany in the sixteenth century...This work did for Germany what Cardan's and Tartaglia's did for Italy. It was a storehouse from which subsequent writers drew, and although not a practical mercantile book, it materially influenced even the elementary textbook makers" (Smith). This copy (like the Plimpton copy) has Melanchthon's name crossed out on the title-page, evidently by a reader unsympathetic to the Reformation. Adams S-1865; BM/STC German p. 832; Smith, pp. 223-226 (copy with dedication and Melanchthon's preface removed); Stillwell Science 236; Norman 2019.
