STETSON, John B., Jr. (1884-1952) -- Romances of Chivalry, European Literature. French Books with Engravings. Rare Americana from the Library of John B. Stetson Jr . New York: American Art Association Anderson Galleries, 17 April 1935. Large 8vo. Many pencilled prices realized and buyers' names. -- The John B. Stetson Collection of Hispanic and Other Americana . New York: Parke-Bernet, 25 February 1953. 3 parts in one, 8 o. Bound together in 2 volumes. Red cloth, olive morocco lettering piece, original wrappers bound in. Provenance : From the library of Arthur Rau. Stetson was heir to the hat fortuned, and co-owner of the Anderson Galleries; he misrepresented himself as a private individual interested only in charitable giving, and successfully negotiated the purchase of Buxton Forman's library, which he then sold at Anderson Galleries (which enraged the former owner). After selling his Wilde collection in 1920, the Depression forced him to sell large parts of his library in 1935 at the prevailing disastrous prices, with Rosenbach (who had sold most of the books to him) now acting for Philip Hofer and Lucius Wilmerding. The posthumous 1953 sale records his remarkable collection of Americana. See Wolf & Fleming, pp. 129-30. (2)
