STATIUS, Publius Papinius (ca. 45-96). Sylvarum libri quinque. Thebaidos libri duodecim. Achilleidos duo. - Orthographia et flexus dictionum graecarum omnium apud Statium . Venice: Aldus Manutius August-November 1502. 3 parts in one volume, Aldine 8° (158 x 99 mm). Collation: a-e 8 ; 2 a- 2 z A-F 8 G 4 ; 2 A- 2 B 8 2 C 4 . 40; 256 leaves, i8 blank. Italic and Greek type. Orthographia in Greek and Latin in two columns, Aldine woodcut anchor device on e8. Initial spaces with guide letters. Illuminated armorial shield in gold and colors of Franciscus Summarina in lower margin of a2r of the Sylvarum . (Title-leaf of Orthographia stained from removal of oval ownership mark, occasional light marginal foxing, C4 with gutter margin reinforced, one or two minor marginal dampstains.) 17th- or 18-century limp vellum, contemporary vellum flyleaves partially ruled (original pastedowns?) (paper endleaves renewed). Provenance : "Francisci Summarina(?) domini Augustini Filii," early inscription on front vellum flyleaf, illuminated coat-of-arms (lion with bend) inscribed "FR. S." on first page of the Sylvarum ; Antonio Sumerfia(?), slightly later inscription on same vellum flyleaf; later marginal note on h1v; deleted stamp or shield on a1 of Orthographia . First Aldine edition of Statius's work, which is incomplete without the Orthographia , bound here before the other three works. Although published earlier, in August 1502, the Achilleidos is bound last, as instructed by the title and register of the Sylvarum . Renouard remarked that the double date "a donné lieu à annoncer deux éditions faites dans la même année". The Orthographia is prefaced by a letter from Aldus to Marcus Musurus, whom he had consulted for the edition. Extremely popular during his lifetime, Statius's reputation has declined greatly since the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, when he was still much admired. Chaucer considered him the equal of Homer and Virgil; he was among the poets who most influenced Petrarch; and Dante depicted Statius in purgatory telling Virgil that reading his work had inspired him to become a Christian. Renouard Alde , 35.7; Adams S-1670 (without the Orthographia ); Brunet V, 512 ("Édition dont on trouve difficilement des exemplaires bien conservés").
