STATIUS, Publius Papinius (ca.45-96 A.D.). Sylvarum libri quinque. Thebaidos libri duodecim. Achilleidos duo. -- Orthographia et flexus dictionum graecarum omnium apud Statium. Venice: Aldus Manutius August - November 1502. 3 parts in one volume, 8° (162 x 95mm). In Greek and Latin. Anchor device on e8 of Orthographia . (Small worm track in lower blank margin, not affecting text, light dampstaining to lower outer corners of first ten quires, a1 and a4-5 of Orthographia slightly soiled.) 18th-century vellum, spine with brown morocco lettering-piece. Provenance : Buonnorrozzi Collection (18th-century inscription). The first Aldine edition of Statius's work, which is incomplete without the 40-leaf Orthographia , here bound before the other three works. The Achilleidos is bound last, following the order on the title and register of the Sylvarum , despite being published in August 1502, whilst the Sylvarum and Thebaidos did not appear until November of that year. According to Renouard, "Cette double date a donné lieu à annoncer deux éditions faites dans la même année". The Orthographia is prefaced by a letter from Aldus to Marcus Musurus, who had advised on the edition. Renouard p.35, no.7; Adams S-1670; Brunet V, 512 ("Édition dont on trouve difficilement des exemplaires bien conservés").
