"STATHAM'S PANOPTICON" An unusual late 19th-Century microscope/telescope compendium, the case with a label for STATHAM'S PANOPTICON Combining a Telescope and Microscope in one Instrument SUITABLE FOR HOME, SEASIDE, OR COUNTRY USE. Wm. E. STATHAM, OPTICIAN, &c., 111, STRAND, LONDON, W.C. , comprising a 1 1/16-inch diameter mahogany-bound three-draw brass refracting telescope, the threaded objective mount with dust cap, the threaded eye-piece mount with sliding dust cover, 16½in. (42cm.) long fully extended , the simple brass microscope in pillar-form casing with swiveling substage mirror, utilising the first draw of the telescope screwed into the top of the casing, the telescope eye-piece left in place, the lens assembly at the other end unscrewed and replaced with a typical microscope objective lens, and focused by sliding the draw-tube, both contained in the original fitted and plush-lined leatherette-covered wooden case, with a compartment for the microscope objective and a padded leather disc with string attached ( purpose unknown ) the lid stamped STATHAM'S PANOPTICON within a decorative stamped border -- 6¾in.
