At upper right the name "John" is written, identifying the script as belonging to the principal set decorator. Minor discoloration to the front cover and a fairly serious scuff above and clear of the title. "The Ultimate Computer" is a great episode. It combines many themes which made the series so interesting, and so inherently philosophical. In the setup the Federation's top computer scientist has taken his field a quantum step ahead by impressing his own brain engrams onto the M-5 computer. The Enterprise is selected for the test run in which the computer will essentially take full command of the ship. In this man versus machine scenario, M-5 at first performs far beyond human capability, but as it draws more and more power from the Enterprise, begins to exhibit the eccentricities and borderline madness of the genius who created it, eventually becoming homicidal. In the end Kirk must compel the machine to comprehend that it has murdered, and accept the punishment for the crime. "This unit must survive," becomes "This unit must die," in the words of M-5, which then attempts to commit suicide. Very rare. Two other items are included: An original 31-page plus cover Star Trek's writer's guide, Los Angeles, 17 April, 1967, 8.5 x 11 in., which contains all sorts of useful information for the screenwriter. The most interesting tidbit might be found in the questions and answers section, the last entry of which is "Are you people on LSD?" Answer: "We tried but we couldn't keep it lit."
