STANLEY'S RING A Victorian silver ring, the plain band with reed border applied with a shield engraved 'Stanley Ang Am Exp 1874-1877', marks indistinct 1in. (25mm.) 0.49oz. (15gr.) A plain but stout ring, an evocative memento of Stanley's greatest expedition. We do not know who gave him this ring or indeed if he had it made up himself, but is was worn by Stanley for most of his life after 1877, as can be seen in many photographs. Like all objects worn on the person it must have been a great talisman for Stanley, a reminder that having survived the ordeals of that expedition everything else he faced could be overcome.
