STANLEY, Thomas (1625-1678). The History of Philosophy . London: Humphrey Moseley and Thomas Dring, 1656-1660. Volumes I and III only, 2° (280 x 176mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait in each volume by W. Faithorne after Lely. 17 engraved portraits of philosophers in volume I and 9 in volume III. (Vol. I severely dampstained, vol. III more slightly affected, lacking vol. II.) Contemporary red gilt-tooled turkey, covers blocked with the ARMS OF CHARLES II, the dedicatee, and enclosed by a fillet and roll tool border, gilt spine panels, gilt edges (lower cover of vol. I scorched by fire over about a fifth of the surface area). Second edition of volume I, first edition of volume III. Although the second volume is actually volume III, the number '2' has been tooled on the spine, possibly at a later date. Wing S-5238 & S-5238A. [Arthur Anselm CROWTHER]. Jesus, Mary, Joseph: or, the Devout Pilgrim of the ever Blessed Virgin Mary . Amsterdam: [no printer], 1663. 8° (145 x 80mm). (Lacks the final leaf of contents.) Contemporary calf, on front cover the title of the book in gilt within an oval laurel wreath, on back cover the ARMS OF CATHERINE OF BRAGANZA, the dedicatee (rebacked), in a red morocco pull-off box by Wallis. Probably one of several copies with the arms of Catherine of Braganza, Queen of Charles II, bound for presentation. Wing C7411; together with one other volume bearing the arms of Charles II. Sold as a collection of royal bindings not subject to return. (4)
