Beschreibung:

ST CATHERINE, illuminated initial on a leaf from a Breviary, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Loire region, 1460s] 180 x 121mm (leaf), 24 x 29mm (initial). Historiated initial of St Catherine in camaeu d'or on a deep pink ground, enclosed in an initial G in blue with foliate decoration, perhaps in tarnished silver, against a gold surround, accompanied by a three-sided border of flower sprays and acanthus in blue, green, pink and gold framed by a thin gold and pink bar to left column and ruled pink lines, frame the other sides of the border, two columns of 30 lines written in a gothic bookhand in black ink, ruled in pink, rubrics in red, one-line initials in burnished gold on grounds of blue and pink with white penwork decoration, three on recto and one on verso (slightly marked on outer margin, paper hinge fastened to upper right corner of verso). This miniature is either the work of Jean Fouquet or a close and gifted follower of Fouquet. Painted with great finesse and delicacy, St Catherine is haloed and crowned, seated in a folding chair with fringed knops, like that of Fouquet's Virgin of Melun (Antwerp, Museum voor Schone Kunsten). She holds the sword of her martyrdom in her right hand and the martyr's palm in her left. The broken wheel lies beside her. The camaeu d'or technique was used by Fouquet in the Hours of Etienne Chevalier as for the opening of the memorial to St Martin where the initial is in gold on a similar deep pink above a fictive diptych executed in gold and brown. Other miniatures or initials in this technique in manuscripts in the Comites Latentes Collection (Ms 38) and Les Enluminures , catalogue 6 (no 8) have been proposed as the autograph work of Fouquet: neither book shows greater refinement or closer familiarity with Fouquet's style and technique than the present miniature. with BAR BORDERS WITH BEAST-HEADS, illuminated leaf from a Psalter [southern Netherlands, c.1300], 149 x 106mm. 17 lines written in black ink and ruled in plummet, one-line initials in burnished gold with blue infill or surround decorated with white penwork incorporated into a pink bar-border which extends for the width of the text in upper and lower margins as burnished gold bands between pink and blue with white penwork, terminating in gilded beast- or bird-head finials, one three-line initial in burnished gold with pink infill against blue (some wear to gilding). PANEL BORDERS, illuminated leaf from a Book of Hours [France, later 15th century], 213 x 147mm. 19 lines written in black ink and ruled in pale pink, panel borders in outer margins of acanthus and flower sprays with gold dots scattered in the background, vertical edges ruled in pink, two three-line initials in blue and white against maroon and gold, one-line initials and line-endings in maroon or blue decorated with liquid gold (slight marking in outer margin).
