SPORTING -- A Short Treatise on that Useful Invention called the Sportsman's Friend; or, the Farmer's Footman . Newcastle: E. Walker [1801]. 8° (191 x 110mm). 3 wood-engraved plates by Thomas Bewick (Frontispiece lightly offset on to title, last few leaves very lightly marked.) Original blue wrappers, uncut. Provenance : 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929), Prime Minister in 1894 (yellow gilt bookplate pasted on to front wrapper). The invention was a spike attached to a halter whereby one could leave one's horse anywhere in the country without the horse wandering off. Schwerdt II, p.161. QUIZEM, Caleb [pseud.]. Annals of Sporting , London: T. Tegg, 1809. 12° (169 x 100mm). Engraved title with hand-coloured vignette, portrait of the 'author' and 27 hand-coloured plates, one folding, by Rowlandson after Bunbury and Woodward. (Some show-through and offsetting.) Original printed boards, paper label on spine, uncut (rubbed), in red cloth folder and slipcase. Schwerdt II, p.119 and pl.93. [GRIFFINHOOFE, Arthur, pseud.]. John Duncombe's Edition. Memoirs of the Life, Public and Private Adventures of Madame Vestris . London: J. Duncombe, [1836?]. 8° (190 x 110mm). Engraved portrait and 6 hand-coloured plates. (Some soiling and spotting.) Contemporary cloth-backed boards, uncut (rubbed); and 23 others including: Ins and outs called to an Account, or, the Wrath of John Bull , (London, 1808), H.V. Mathias' Five Weeks' Sport in the Interior of the Himalayas , (London, 1865) and Charles Persius' The Academicians of 1823; or, the Greeks of the Palais Royal, and the Clubs of St. James's , (London, 1823).
