SPEED, John. The Historie of Great Britaine Under the Conquests of the Romans, Saxons, Danes and Normans. London: John Beale for George Humble, 1623. 2 o (327 x 209 mm). Text in two columns printed within line borders throughout, woodcut illustrations, initials and ornaments. (Edges shaved, occasionally affecting some words, some marginal writing in ink.) Later quarter calf (overall rubbing, chipping and staining). Provenance: J. B. Speed Art Museum, Louisville, Kentucky (white manuscript shelf marks on spines, pencilled shelf numbers on verso of title). John Speed historian and cartographer, first published his Historie of Great Britaine in 1611. The Historie is a companion piece to his atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine . (See previous lot). STC 23046.3.
