Payne and J. White / Payne and Foss Date: 1809 & 1835 Description: 2 volumes. 133 engraved plates. (Folio) Volume 1: 53x36 cm (20¾x14"), three quarter morocco; Volume 2: 56x38 cm (22x15") boards. First Edition. Blackmer describes this as a "sumptuous work... the engraving of the beautiful mezzotint plates took years" (Blackmer). A selection of the antiquities owned by members of the Society of Dilettanti, largely from the collections of Charles Towneley and Payne Knight. At the rear of the second volume is a supplement by Knight, "An Inquiry into the Symbolical Language of Ancient Art and Mythology". Scarce. Lot Amendments Condition: Bindings detached and well worn; foxing; internally very good, binding in need of replacement. Item number: 261872
