Six lines written in black and red ink ink in a gothic bookhand between two verticals and 54 horizontals ruled in red, above the text six four-lined staves with neumes of a square-shaped notation, rubrics in red, justification: 115 x 70mm. eight five-line initials of burnished gold with infills of pink or blue with white decoration, numerous one and two-line initials of burnished gold on grounds with infills of pink and blue with white decoration, f.3r an opening fully illuminated leaf with three-quarter borders made up of colored acanthus leaves scrolling in pink, green and blue with naturalistic flowers and tassels sprouting from an amphora. Late 15th-century olive morocco, covers densely tooled in gilt with elaborate scroll work, graceful fillets and leafy sprays, containing the dove in glory, the emblem of the order of St. Esprit and the cherubs head, the covers blind stamped with two central lozenge-shaped cartouches of the Crucifixion and the Annunciation (obverse) in gilt, Annunciation lettered below ‘Ave Gratia Plena’, spine decoratively tooled in gilt, all edges gilt, lacking clasps, late 19th-century black morocco slipcase, lined in blue silk. Condition: occasional spotting, wear to margins with some loss of gilt; corners bumped, extremities lightly rubbed, joints restored with a few cracks at head and foot. Provenance: Charles Hémart de Denonville, c.1530 (inscription on flyleaf); Sister Loyse de Hémart (armorial badge on dedication page, a supplementary prayer in French appears twice in her hand, once signed within the original work c.1534); Sister Judith de Forgues, 1603 (armorial badge and inscription on paper flyleaf). a fine french processional, lavishly and uniquely bound, probably purchased by Charles Hémart, ordained in 1518 and created Cardinal at the request of the King Francois I in 1536. He subsequently bequeathed the processional to his sister Loyse, part of the religious order at St. Marceau in Paris, inscription dates the gift at 1534.
