Beschreibung:

South German Baroque Walnut, Maple, Fruitwood, Pine and Various Other Woods Fassendenschrank Mid 17th century The molded cornice above a dentilated edge and an architrave with scrolling flowers and the initials PG BZ, with the date 1652, over a pair of cupboard doors decorated with broken pediments, finials, rectangular panels with interlaced strapwork and eagles' heads, on voluted brackets, centered and flanked by engaged pilasters, the central one with Doric capital and ending in herringbone inlay, the base with similarly inlaid molded panels, raised on bun feet. Height 7 feet 5 inches (2.26 m), width 6 feet 8 1/2 inches (2.04 m), depth 27 inches (68.6 cm). This cabinet, called a Fassadenschrank in German, is dated 1652 (or 7), each date possibly interwoven with the monograms of a wedding couple, possibly PG and BZ. The literal translation of this word is 'facade cabinet', an appropriate term for this highly architectural design, which recalls Italian Renaissance palaces. An earlier 17th century example from Nurnberg is exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum, New York, and bears a label explaining the evolution of its design: 'Cabinetmakers of Renaissance Germany had to study antique and contemporary architectural theory, especially the orders of columns, before becoming guild masters. The German edition of De architectura by the Roman architect Vitruvius, first translated from Latin in 1548 by Walther Ryff of Nürnberg, was highly influential. This illustrated book was intended for practical workshop use rather than appeal to a limited number of humanist connoisseurs.' The present cabinet is a compendium of architectural motifs popular at the time of its construction and, as such, serves as a register of ornament in mid 17th century Southern Germany. C
With previous restorations and in need of extensive restoration, beautiful quality, wonderful architectural form, but lacking molding, edges and elements throughout, handle to left door with broken housing, unable to remove key, age cracks to sides, molded cornice appears to be later
