Title: Some Thoughts Concerning the present Revival of Religion in New-England, and the Way in which it ought to be acknowledged and promoted... Author: Edwards, Jonathan Place: Boston & Edinburgh Publisher: T. Lumisden and J. Robertson Date: 1743 Description: iv, 221 pp. 6¾x4¼, bound in contemporary calf. Note: Not the true first edition. Originally published one year earlier (1742) with 378 pages. Edwards (1793-1758) is considered by many to be one of the greatest preachers and churchmen in American history; graduated Yale University at the head of his class and after years of tutoring and preaching. He is credited with bringing about the first "Great Awakening" of American history, beginning in 1734, when a few sudden conversions in Edwards' parish began turning into a flood of over a hundred a month, drawing people from up to a hundred miles away. Edwards insisted on more stringent membership requirements than were customary at the time, requiring evidence of conversion and regeneration. His move to exclude from the Communion those who did not meet his high standards led to a two-year battle within the congregation. In 1750, Edwards was dismissed from his pastorate. Edwards went to a mission post in Stockbridge on the western border of Massachusetts, where he pastored a small English congregation. He was also a missionary to 150 Mohican and Mohawk families and wrote many of his major works there. After several years on the frontier, Edwards assumed the presidency of Princeton in the fall of 1757, but less than a year later, died of smallpox complications. Early inked ownership inscription: "Joseph Hartwell's Book to be lefft (sic) at Jos:Butlers at Gingeon(?)" on the front pastedown. Lot Amendments Condition: Mild scuffs and edge wear, old glue repairs to splitting joints; faint dampstain to front pastedown, ink stain to front free endpaper, occasional light foxing; about very good. Scarce and important early American religious work. Item number: 159862
