SOLVYNS, Frans Baltasar (1760-1824). The Costume of Hindostan, elucidated by sixty coloured engravings. London: W.Bulmer & Co. for Edward Orme 1804 [pre-publication watermarks]. 2° (355 x 260mm). Parallel titles and text in French and English. 60 hand-coloured stipple-engraved or soft-ground etched plates, most by Scott or T.Vivares after Solvyns. (Some light marginal soiling, light spotting to first and last few leaves.) Contemporary London dark-blue straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with decorative border incorporating a floral and a variant greek-key pattern border, spine in six compartments with double raised bands, lettered in two, the others with repeat pattern composed from small tools and pointillé work, gilt turn-ins, gilt and lightly gauffered edges (some light scratching to lower cover, joints very slightly rubbed), slipcase. Provenance : Hans Fürstenberg (booklabel). A FINE COPY of the first European edition of Solvyns's work. This is a re-worked selection from A Collection of... etchings descriptive of the manners, customs and dresses of the Hindoos , originally published in Calcutta in 1799 with 250 plates.
