SOLOMON BEN ISAAC (Rashi; 1040-1105). Anonymous super-commentary on Rashi's commentary on the Torah (from Va-Yetse to Chukkat ). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER AND VELLUM [Probably Provence, 15th century] 4 o (220 x 140 mm). 107 leaves, imperfect. Brown and dark grey ink. Sephardic (Provencal) semi-cursive script. With numerous marginal notes, possibly by Rabbi Matatiah ha-Yitshari (see Neubauer, and, e.g., fols. 9r, 41rv). Most outer sheets of the quires are of parchment, the inner sheets of paper. (Soiled and stained, edges frayed, last leaf damaged with loss of text, penultimate leaf worn and repaired with loss of some text, some minor worming with occasional loss of commentary text, text generally well legible.) Modern blind and gold-tooled red morocco, two modern paper flyleaves at back and front. CONTENTS: The author, who lived around the beginning of the fifteenth century, quotes various sources, especially from Spain, among them Isaac ben Moses Duran (died c. 1414) with the blessing for a long life (fol. 102v). He also quotes Levi ben Reuben (fol. 47r) and R. Abraham in his commentary on tractate Niddah (fol. 82v; in the New York manuscript the same is quoted in the name of Aaron Halevi). The text was never printed. The same anonymous commentary is found in MS New York, JTS, L 802, and in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, MS Kaufman 35. PROVENANCE: Daniel Itzig (stamped). REFERENCES: Neubauer, no. 2, p. 1; Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts, Jerusalem, F 4671; A. Neubauer, in Revue des tudes juives 9 (1884) p. 119.
