On his voyage south, Snow commanded the Mission Yacht 'Allen Gardiner,' named for the naval commander who founded the Patagonian Missionary Society in 1844. Gardiner and his crew landed in Tierra del Fuego in 1850 to establish a mission but died the following year before a supply ship could reach them. With Gardiner's son, Snow established the mission headquarters on Keppel Island, West Falklands in 1855 at a period when Britain had secured the Falklands but continually battled the 'depredations' of sealers and whalers to the wild life.
