SNOW, W. Parker A Two Years' Cruise off Tierra del Fuego, The Falkland Islands, Patagonia, and in the River Plate . London: Longman, Brown, 1857. 2 volumes, 8° (203 x 130mm). 6 chromolithographic plates, 3 hand-tinted folding maps. Blind-stamped blue cloth gilt, (one inner hinge cracked). Provenance : Samuel Weare Gardiner. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. On his voyage south, Snow commanded the Mission Yacht 'Allen Gardiner,' named for the naval commander who founded the Patagonian Missionary Society in 1844. Gardiner and his crew landed in Tierra del Fuego in 1850 to establish a mission but died the following year before a supply ship could reach them. With Gardiner's son, Snow established the mission headquarters on Keppel Island, West Falklands in 1855 at a period when Britain had secured the Falklands but continually battled the 'depredations' of sealers and whalers to the wild life. Appended are his remarks on the Falklands as a penal settlement, proposed by Governor Moore and supported by Snow. Sabin 85559. [W. Parker SNOW.]. Copies of Memorials or Representations from Mr. W.P. Snow... relative to his Removal from the Command of the "Allan Gardner" by Order of the Authorities of the Falkland Islands . London: The House of Commons, 1858. 2°, disbound, (4 leaves torn and stained). The newly arrived mission superintendent dismissed Snow for failing to take orders. According to maritime law Snow determined he, not the owner's representative, was master of the vessel. The governor detained the "Gardner" just as Snow was ready to put to sea. (3)
