Beschreibung:

A General Account of the Development of the Methods of Using Atomic Energy for Military Purposes Under the Auspices of the United States Government. 1940-1945. [Washington, D.C.: Published by the War Department, Aug. 12, 1945.] Folio (260 x 197 mm). [193] pp. Stapled into the original printed wrappers as issued. Typed label to upper cover "Copy No. 5 Division V. Lieut. R.S. Dunham." Light soiling and wear to wrappers, otherwise an excellent copy. RARE PRE-PUBLICATION LITHOPRINT ISSUE OF THE "SMYTH REPORT," THE FIRST ACCOUNT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ATOM BOMB, COMPLETE WITH THE SECRET PAGE VI-12, FOUND BLANK IN MOST COPIES. The lithoprint edition was distributed shortly after the dropping of the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Approximately 1000 copies were printed, and were given to leaders of the Manhattan Project as well as various reporters, though most of these copies were of course issued without the secret page VI-12, as it discussed plutonium production rates. Laid in are a copy of the original press release for the report, a commendation letter, and an original shoulder patch awarded to the Army officers and enlisted men who worked on the Manhattan Project. PMM 422e.
