Provenance : Canterbury Public Library (Christchurch, New Zealand, bookplate, numerous red ink library stamps). FIRST EDITION: a fine copy of this series of measured drawings and photogravures of this ancient capital, founded in 437 B.C. and an important Buddhist centre until the 8th century A.D. when, after repeated Tamil incursions, it was abandoned in favour of Pollonarrua. The measured drawings are by the author, who is described on the title as 'late Architect to the Government of Ceylon', and in the preface explains that he was employed by successive governors to produce the present work. The photogravures are taken from images by Joseph Lawton In 1870-1871 he was employed to photograph a wide range of archaeological sites in Sri Lanka - his photographic business was continued by his wife after his death in 1872.
