SMITH & SON, CHARLES, LONDON, 1830 Smith's TERRESTRIAL GLOBE containing the whole of THE LATEST DISCOVERIES AND Geographical Improvements also the TRACKS of THE MOST CELEBRATED CIRCUMNAVIGATORS LONDON. C. SMITH & SON, 172, Strand. 1830 A fine 12-inch (30.5cm.) diameter terrestrial table/library globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores on a hollow plaster-covered sphere, the equatorial graduated in individual degrees and labelled every 10°, and in hours I-XXIIII in one direction and I-XII (x2) in the other and in minutes labelled every 15 with four-minute subdivisions, the meridian of Greenwich ungraduated, the equinoctial colure graduated in individual degrees and labelled every 10°, the ecliptic graduated in individual days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils and of the month with names, each labelled every ten days, the oceans with an analemma and showing the tracks of Cook, Clerke, Gore, Vancouver and La Perouse with numerous dates, the Sandwich Islands showing Karakooa B. Here Capt. Cook was killed 1779 , Antarctica with no land shown but a note for Capt. J. Weddell R.N. reached this point 1823 and I. Pierre and I. Alexander , the continents with some nation states delicately shaded in olive green, and some others outlined in orange, showing mountains, rivers, towns and cities, China with the Great Wall, Australia largely blank in the interior, New Guinea lacking some coastline, Tasmania labelled VAN DIEMEN'S LAND , the islands of New Zealand labelled EAHEI NOMAEWE and TOVAI POEN AMOO , the interior of Africa largely blank but elsewhere with notes such as Stony Desert , Oasis of Taudeny and Land of Dates , North America shown with California as Baja California, California as it is now labelled PLAINS OF NUESTRA SONORA DE LA PAZ , with notes for native tribes Stony Indians , Snake In s , Blackfoot In s , COPPER INDIAN LAND and others, elsewhere a small pictorial representation of Two High Hills and a location near Vancouver Island named Village of Rascals , Alaska labelled RUSSIAN AMERICA and a note Bound y Settled 1825 , and Canada and Greenland with no northern coastline, with a stamped brass hour dial, the stamped brass meridian circle divided in four quadrants, on a tall mahogany table stand/short library stand, the hand-coloured engraved horizon ring graduated in degrees of amplitude and azimuth, with compass directions, days of the month and days of the houses of the Zodiac, edged in red and raised on four curved quadrant supports to a baluster turned column with meridian support and three scroll-topped inswept legs terminating in scroll feet with castors, a glazed compass case held between, the engraved paper graduated in four quadrants around the circumference, with a thirty-two point wind rose and blued-steel needle -- 31in. (48.8cm.) high
