SMITH, Joseph, Consul (1682-1770). Bibliotheca Smithiana . London: S. Baker and G. Leigh, 25 January 1773. 8° (210 x 124mm). Half-title, with title in French on verso . (Very faint spotting confined to first few leaves.) Modern half calf. Provenance : Dr Wilkinson (contemporary ink ownership inscription) – Trinity College, Cambridge (cancelled stamp on English title). The sale catalogue of Smith's second library. Smith, who was British consul at Venice, sold his first collection to George III in 1762 for £10,000. It became the nucleus of the 'King's Library,' now in the British Library. De Ricci, pp. 54-55.

Title with engraved device, engraved arms on verso of final leaf, complete with the ‘Catalogo de’ libri Cominiani’, and bound with modern typescript partial index at end. Modern quarter vellum over stiff pasteboards. Bigmore & Wyman III, p.54 (‘Very rare, only 200 copies having been printed’). FITZ-JAMES, François duc de – Catalogue des livres de M. feu le duc de Fitz-James, e´ve^que de Soissons . Paris: Leclerc, 15 April 1765. 8° (193 x 124mm). Woodcut device on title. (Small marginal chip and burn-hole to title, this latter extending through the first 10 leaves, variable light spotting.) Modern marbled-paper covered boards. PRICED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND .
