Contemporary red straight-grained morocco gilt architectural binding, spine gilt in compartments, gilt turn-ins, woven pink silk doublures and endpapers (upper board detached, extremities rubbed). Technically unusual for the range of illustrative techniques used -- etching, aquatint, mezzotint, woodcut and the one lithograph (plate 13). 'Courtney Lewis, in his Picture Printing in England , page 121, claims that this is the first lithograph published in an English book. The art was, however, practised in England as early as 1801, and it is possible that other examples in books of a more ephemeral nature may be found.' Abbey Scenery 210. Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1702[-04]. 3 volumes, 2° (392 x 242mm). Half titles, engraved portrait frontispieces (ink cancels on title pages, tears to frontispiece of vol. III with upper corner restored, repaired tear to title of Book II, light dampstaining, some worming). Contemporary non-uniform calf (rebacked, new endpapers, extremities lightly rubbed).
