Large folding engraved map (312 x 380 mm) of New England (i.e., Massachusetts Bay), woodcut coats of arms, seal and woodcut capitals. (Map shaved to platemark in a few places, backed with japanese tissue, small closed tear at gutter; text leaves slightly cropped at lower and fore-margins, affecting catchwords and signatures on 9 pages, just catching lowermost lines of text on 3 pages, shaving a few words in poem on A3v and a very few side-notes; scattered stains.) Dark red morocco janséniste, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Provenance : Pierre S. duPont III (his sale Christie's New York, 8 October 1991, lot 234). FIRST EDITION, WITH THE IMPORTANT MASSACHUSETTS MAP. "This is Smith's last production, and from a literary point of view, his best....The sixth book of [his] Generall Historie of Virginia relates to New England....In the Advertisements he brings the history of that plantation down to 1630. Two chapters (XI and XII) are devoted to the settlement of Salem and Charleston (Charlestown), and give a sad account of the condition of the colony for months after the Winthrop emigration" (Church). The famous map included with Smith's tract is here in its 8th state (with arms of the Council of New England added at center). It constitutes the first accurate depiction of the Massachusetts coast, and has been called the "foundation map of New England cartography" (Streeter sale 610). It first appeared in Smith's Description of New England in 1616, and was used in several of his works (as in lot 1), with continual modifications to the plate: nine states have been recorded. "The seventh state...is the one which best fits the book... Earlier and later states may also have been issued with the book, as the sixth state...or the eighth state" (Sabin). Alden & Landis 631/101; Church 419; STC 22787; Sabin 82815. RARE: only this and the Laird Park copy have been offered at auction in over 25 years.
