4 pages, in ink, on 2 sheets of plain paper. Signed A.G. Goodwyn, and with docketing affirmation by Joseph Hopper, clerk. 24.3x19.45 cm (9½x7¾"). Albert G. Goodwyn, of the prominent and extensive Goodwyn clan, who were to later join with the family of President John Tyler through marriage, transfers a large number of slaves to his relatives: "the following negroes, towit, Prince, Surry, Shmail, Dinah, Elveniah, Jane, Sam, Little Sarah, Mimy, and her child Sally, Susan with her children, Little Judy and Peggy. Rose, with her son Jeffry, her Daughter Mariah, Little Mariah, … To have and to hold the above described Negroes with their future increase, to the said William A. Goodwin…” The transfer was conditional, the slaves were to be used as collateral for a loan, and transfer of ownership would only go through if the loan was not repaid. Provenance: Descended in the Tyler-Goodwyn family.
