I want you to do with it (the renting out) as you would for yourself & I will be satisfied. Give the Dr the refusal if it suits you, as I told him so. The YANKY RAID CALLED ON ME & CARRIED OFF ALL MY NEGROES AT HOME EXCEPT THREE (35 or 40 in all) besides doing other damage to a great extent & I HARDLY ESCAPED WITH MY LIFE. Yrs Truly, A. J. Leavelle On reverse side: Mr. Alexander Donnan, Petersburg, Va. ANDREW JACKSON LEAVELLE (1816-1886) was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and moved to Petersburg by the 1840s. He was the son of Burwell and Anna Leavelle. In 1843, he married Martha F. Weeks (ca 1820-1887). In the 1860 Census, A. J. Leavelle was listed in Sussex County, VA as a farmer with $13,000 property, $40,000 personal. SAMUEL WILSON M.D. (1810-1874) of Surry County, Virginia was married to Alice Rebecca Coke (1828-1879) daughter of John Coke of Williamsburg, Virginia. They are buried in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, Virginia. THE STONY CREEK RAID ON THE WELDON RAILROAD (December 7-12, 1864): In mid-December 1864, Major General Gouverneur K. Warren set forth on a raid south down the Weldon Railroad in the direction of Stony Creek, intent on destroying as much of this vital supply line as possible. Trailed by a force commanded by A.P. Hill, Warren's men were able to destroy large sections of the railroad and destroy other supplies which could have been used by the Confederates. A good many local citizens suffered during this raid when the Union troops destroyed many dwellings in the Courthouse area, and forced natives into a freezing snowfall, a retaliation after finding the corpses of Union soldiers who had been killed and mutilated by Confederate guerrillas. The return march became a small version of the March to the Sea. Large numbers of African Americans from local farms flocked to join the column. Northward from the Courthouse, many barns and homes were burned by the Federal column. Condition: Dark ink on white lined paper. Half-sheet torn along bottom. Otherwise good condition. Un-stamped stained-brown cover addressed to “Missrs. Alex & Jas. Donnan, Petersburg Va."
