Nice clear images, with few spots on each plate; portrait of an attractive young woman wearing lace collar, housed in full case, velvet mat stamped by Purnell, Artist/ Van Loan Gallery 159 Chestnut St., Phil. Tarnish ring along perimeter, with some spotting; and portrait of a bearded gentleman under mat stamped Appleby, housed in full case separated at hinge. Nice clear image, possibly produced by Richard Appleby, who operated a studio in Rochester, although this cannot be confirmed. Sixth plate ambrotype of gentleman, the background tinted blue, creating an unusual effect, housed in full case (separated at hinge), stamped in gilt by Beard & Foard, Liverpool, England. Some flaking of varnish.
