Title: Six early and seminal papers on DNA, in four issues of Nature Author: Watson, James D. & Francis H.C. Crick, et al. Place: London Publisher: Macmillan & Co., Ltd. Date: 1953-1961 Description: Includes: Watson, James D. & Francis Crick. "Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids: A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid." Pp. 737-8 in Nature, No. 4356, Vol. 171, April 25, 1953. Wilkins, Maurice H.F., A.R. Stokes & H.R. Wilson. "Molecular Structure of Deoxypentose Nucleic Acids." Pp. 738-740 in Nature, No. 4356, Vol. 171, April 25, 1953. Franklin, Rosalind E. & R.G. Gosling. "Molecular Configuration in Sodium Thymonucleate." Pp. 740-741 in Nature, No. 4356, Vol. 171, April 25, 1953. Watson, James D. & Francis Crick. "Genetic Implications of the Structure of Deoxyribonucleic Acid." Pp. 964-967 in Nature, No. 4361, Vol. 171, May 30, 1953. Wilkins, M. H. F., W. E. Seeds, A. R. Stokes, H. R. Wilson. “Helical Structure of Crystalline Deoxypentose Nucleic Acid.” Pp. 759-762 in Nature, No. 4382, Vol. 172, October 24, 1953. Crick, Francis, Leslie Barnett, Dr. S. Brenner & Dr. R.J. Watts-Tobin. "General Nature of the Genetic Code for Proteins." Pp. 1227-1232 in Nature, No. 4809, Vol. 192, December 30, 1961. Together, 4 issues of Nature. Illustrated. 25.5x17.7 cm (10x7"); original printed self-wrappers. The publication, in their original journal format in weekly issues of Nature, of six important articles on the structure of the DNA molecule, including the two seminal articles by Watson and Crick. These articles were to profoundly alter the understanding of the genetic process, and also containing the first illustrations of the double helix structure of the molecule. The discovery of DNA was the signature development in the understanding of genetics, marking the transition between two ages of what might be called the "classical age" of biology and a second "age" of molecular biology. Watson, Crick and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine in 1962 "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material." Of the two articles by Watson and Crick, the Journal format of the first article pre-dates its offprint, though the priority of the second is uncertain. Lot Amendments Condition: Some fairly minor aging and wear, a few corners of wrappers or early pages bent, some rust stains to spines from the staples; very good. Item number: 283402
