The first informing Cary of his intentions to submit his name to the King for a knighthood in his resignation list of honours, adding "Perhaps in order to save time you will let T. L. Rowan at 10 Downing Street (Whitehall 4433) have your reply by telegram at the earliest moment." The second saying "I am sorry you did not succeed in regaining Ashton-under-Lyne, but it is much too early to expect any change in the attitude of the constituency." A 4-page telegram from Churchill to Sir Robert Cary, 228 Stamford Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, 8°, 27 Sep 1945, wishing him success in his by-election, "The need for a strong and virile opposition in the present House of Commons is beyond question ... Your military service, your administrative experience abroad, and your business and Parliamentary experience at home would make you a valuable accession to the ranks of the opposition."
