Sir William Gooch, 1st Baronet (1681-1751). 12 x 13 in., framed to 17.75 x 18.75 in. Indenture for 800 acres of land in Henrico Co., Colony of Virginia for the payment of four pounds. Signed boldly by William Gooch. Gooch was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, and served as Governor of Virginia 1727-1749, when he returned to England. Although technically Lieutenant Governor, both Governors of title during this time were absent, leaving the day-to-day running of Virginia to Gooch. He named Goochland, Virginia for himself, and Staunton, VA for his wife, Rebecca Staunton. Condition: Appears to be water wrinkled, but ink still dark. Not removed from frame for examination.
