Morier's account 'at once took rank as an important authority on a country then little known to Englishmen, and by its admirable style and accurate observation, its humour and graphic power, still holds a foremost place among early books of travel in Persia' (DNB). Morier was attached to Sir Harford Jones's mission to the court of Persia. After sailing from Portsmouth 27 October 1807, the mission reached Bombay in April 1808 and arrived at Teheran in February 1809. After three months Morier was sent home (7 May), making his journey by way of Turkey, and staying with family in Constantinople where his father was British ambassador. He finally arrived at Plymouth on 25 November 1809. Morier retired upon publishing his second book of travels, and devoted himself to the writing of romances, chiefly set in the east. Abbey Travel 357, 358; Atabey 836, 837; Brunet III, 1904. (2)
