Robert Black, The Art of Jacob Epstein New York, Cleveland, 1942, p. 241, no. 222 (dated 1936) Jacob Epstein Epstein: An Autobiography, London, 1955, after p.125 (illus. of plaster) Richard Buckle Jacob Epstein Sculptor, 1963, pp. 341-342, figs. 339-41, illus. Edward P. Schinman, ed., Jacob Epstein A Catalogue of the Collection of Edward P. Schinman, 1970, p. 59 (illus. of another cast) Evelyn Silber, The Sculpture of Epstein, Oxford, 1986, no. 261, listed as from the 1960 Robinson sale, p. 180, illus. (76.2 cm) In 1921, Epstein met Kathleen Garman, who became his second wife many years later. The artist made seven portraits of her in bronze. This piece is considered one of the finest. In describing the creation of this work, Epstein stated, Imagine him [the sculptor] in a state in which critical analysis of the form and emotional exaltation are present, at the same time...A sonnet of Shakespeare, or Faust's invocation to Helen comes to mind....Inward fire must be translated to clay. Scattered loss to the patina, especially on the left side of the face, the neck, and the upper chest and shoulders. A few tiny losses to the left hand. Some waterstaining on the outer arms and upper neck.
