SIR ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON (1874-1922) South. The story of Shackleton's last expedition 1914-1917. London: William Heinemann, 1920. 8° (24.8 x 15.3cm.). Coloured frontispiece, plates, folding two-colour map at back. (Map torn.) Original black cloth, blocked in silver, top edge silvered (corners and head and foot of spine bumped). Provenance : Harry Reynolds (lengthy presentation inscription from Sir Ernest Shackleton 'My dear Reynolds Herewith the story of the "Endurance" May the Quest now fitting out under your care add to the widening of the bounds of human knowledge. E.H.Shackleton. July 1921', additionally signed by nine members of the "Quest" and/or the "Endurance" expeditions, including C.R.Carr, F.A.Worsley, L.D.A.Hussey, A.H.Macklin, Sir Daniel Gooch, D.G.Jeffrey, F.Wild and A.J.Kerr); by descent. First edition, fourth impression. [ With :] Frank HURLEY and others (photographers). Nine related gelatin-silver print photographs, one signed by Shackleton, [printed 1921 or earlier], various sizes. [ and ]: an unused photographic postcard. Provenance : Harry Reynolds (presented by Shackleton, according to family tradition); by descent. Harry Reynolds ran the repairs division of the Southampton shipbuilding firm John L. Thornycroft & Co. Ltd., and carried out the refit of the Quest . The refit was completed in time for the Quest to set sail in September 1921 on what was to prove to be Shackleton's final voyage. The photographs include a signed snap-shot portrait of Shackleton (9.4 x 7.4cm.), half-length, standing at the rail of a ship, tipped onto the front pastedown of the book; the Quest docked in the Thornycroft yard (9.6 x 15.1cm.); Endurance at the edge of the ice-shelf (15.6 x 20.5cm.); on board the Endurance showing the dog kennels with Leonard Hussey standing in the foreground (20.6 x 15.4cm.); two 'portraits' of male elephant seals on ?South Georgia (15.7 x 20.9cm. and 10.3 x 16.3cm.); two views of the whaling station at Grytviken, South Georgia (15.5 x 20.6cm. and 10.2 x 15.8cm.); a husky in its snow-shelter on the pack-ice (7.9 x 10.7cm.) and a postcard showing a dog-team being disembarked from the Endurance .
