ca 1910, replicates a woman's hair-pipe necklace. This example has a large square ornament hanging from wide shoulder straps; necklace is constructed of rawhide slats covered with porcupine quill wrapping. Quills are aniline dyed in orange, fuschia, and red. Quilled design consists of stepped triangles on the shoulder bands and on the base. Additional embellishments include red ribbons tied at the cross bars. Lower plate decorations include rawhide slats wrapped with fuchsia yarn, center beaded medallion with quilled ties ending in tin cones stuffed with orange or red feathers, and additional quilled ties at the sides and middle. Lower border is decorated with facetted black beads and orange feathers. Two rows of beads in a variety of colors (black, cobalt, and pale turquoise) form the back of the necklace; a wide green-gold ribbon adds colorful interest. Ornament is backed with muslin and much of the stitching is with thread, length through center 36" x width at bottom 8.75". This is a great amalgamation of native and non-native materials. Provenance:Ex Vernon S. and Rowena Griffith Foundation Condition:Some red ribbon missing, very little quill loss, some light stains on green sash.
