SINN FEIN FLAG A Sinn Fein flag assembled from pieces of green, white and orange/brown cloth, with the words 'Sinn Fein Go Deo' [Sinn Fein Forever] in painted letters on the white central section above a horizontal sprig of shamrocks, circa 30 x 56 ins overall, some of the original stitching perished but generally in good condition, with a collection of military-style items including a peaked tweed cap (worm-eaten), canvas despatch bag, two leather belts with ammunition pouches, and another belt with holster. Provenance: These items were retrieved by a Dublin Castle employee, Mr. James Hayes (see previous lots, 508 & 509), in Dublin Castle yard in the immediate aftermath of the Easter 1916 Rising, where they had been dumped by British soldiers and RIC (see a letter of provenance supplied by Mr. Hayes' son when sold by Whyte's in 1999). There appears to be no reasonable doubt that they have a Volunteer provenance. Flags and similar items which can be reliably associated with the Rising are now very rare.
