Grant writes, "Madison Barracks / Sackets Harbor, N.Y. / April 2, 1849 / Sir, / I have the honor herewith to forward my return of Ordnance and Ordnance stores pertaining to (I) Co. 4th Reg't of Inf'y for the quarter ending the 31st of March / 1849 / I am *** / Very Respetfully / Your Obt. Svt. / U.S. Grant / 1st Lt., 4th Inf. / ***." Following Grant's service in the Mexican War, he received assignments as a quartermaster to several different posts from 1849-1852. His first post-war assignments took him and his new wife, Julia, to Detroit and Sackets Harbor, New York. Autograph letters from Grant during his early days in the army are scarce.
