Significance: Humphrey (1823-1883) was a prominent American daguerreotypist and editor of The Daguerrean Journal, the world's first specialist photographic periodical, which began publication in 1850, later changing its title to Humphrey's Journal Devoted to the Daguerrean and Photogenic Arts. He was one of the first people to take a photograph of the moon. His works include: A System of Photography (1849), The American Hand Book of the Daguerreotype (1853) and A Practical Manual of the Collodion Process (1857). This book was one of the first American manuals to provide full instructions for the collodion wet-plate process. This particular copy is signed by what appears to be "G. Lillie" and dated "1860." Likely belonged to George Lillie (1836-1861), a UK portrait photographer who worked from 1855 to 1861 and was well regarded. According to website FadingImages.uk, the Cambridge Independent Press reported in 1857, "Our young townsman, Mr. Geo Lilley, seems determined to spare neither expense nor pains to perfect himself in the above art, if we may judge from the exceedingly beautiful portraits that emanate from his studio.” Details: This book has five parts: "Introduction/Camera," "Practical Hints on Photographic Chemistry," "Practical Details of the Positive or Ambrotype Process," "Practical Details of the Negative Process," and "Practical Details of the Printing Process." It covers apparatus, chemicals and operations needed for producing ambrotypes as well as albumen coatings; gives details concerning the Helioprocess, a method of using a monobath solution on negative and positive collodion coatings. Inside cover and signed page have some discoloration. Corrections page, lots of foxing both sides. (It is the only page with lots of foxing. The corresponding page in the back also has foxing, but less. No other page besides these two has foxing.) Two small transfer stains onto first page of text. Text pages of the book are good but with some discoloration and some of the text is light.
