Sidney Richard Percy (1821-1886) 'Wimbledon Common' Oil on canvas Signed 'S. R. Percy' lower left Dated '1861' lower left 60cm x 95cm Provenance: with Richard Green, Stock number AK 181 Sidney Richard Percy (Sutton 1821-1886 Sutton) Sidney Richard Percy was the son of renowned landscape painter Edward Williams and one of six brothers who all became respected painters, similarly to other members of the family he changed his name to avoid confusion. S. R. Percy went on to become one of the most defining landscape paintings of the Victorian era. In 1857 at the age of thirty-six he was married to Miss Emily Charlotte Fairlan, and the resided in Wimbledon park for just over six years. During this period he painted numerous scenes around the Wimbledon area, this is an exceptional example of that area showing the typical traits of Sidney Richard Percy with such fine detail, almost photographic realism and perfectly balanced compositions. S. R. Percy was known for capturing everyday rural scenes from the rich landscapes, to the detail shown in his figures. As one of the Victorian eras most prolific painters S. R. Percy is widely respected and collected. During his lifetime exhibiting at The Royal Academy, The National Institution and The Society of British Artists among many others. His work are represented in The Victoria Art Gallery, The Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, The Tate Gallery, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts among many other galleries and important private collections
