Beschreibung:

SHEN PENG b. 1931 Calligraphy in the Semicursive and Cursive Script (xingcao). Two Antithetic, Rhymed Lines, dui lian, from a Four Lined Poem by Du Fu of the Tang Dynasty Reading: Through endless space with rustling sound / the falling leaves are whirled around. Signed: After a poem by Du Shaoling, Beijing 1987, Shen Peng Seal 1: Shen Peng Seal 2: The rule of nature is not easy to find (carved by Chen Ping) Seal 3: Just a pastime hobby 130 x 50 cm PROVENANCE: A gift from the artist to Professor (Docent) Lars Berglund in 1987. NOTE: Shen Peng is now reckoned as one of the most distinguished living calligraphers in East Asia. He is particularly famous for his compositions in running (xing shu) and "grass" cursive (caoshu) scripts. Each character in the first line of this cuplet has its ´relative´, or counterpart, in the second line. The first begins with the negation wu, the second with the negation bu. Both lines have doubled characters: rustle-rustle, i.e. a strong sound of rustling, and stream-stream, i.e. a very torrent or whirling water. The last character in the first line is a direction: downwards (xia), while the last character in the second line express something arriving or coming (lai). This way of composing rhymed poems has a long history in China and is still very popular among intellectuals and artists. However, instead of composing a poem of ones own, one is free to use old poems and make artistic interpretations of them with ones own calligraphy. Just as Shen Peng has done here. Du Fu (712-770).
