Additional engraved title and 83 engraved plates, 2 double-page, by and after Shaw and colour-printed by C. Whittingham of Chiswick, most hand-finished, 10 tinted engravings, many coloured historiated initials and illustrations in the text, title printed in red and black. (Some spotting.) Contemporary half morocco, spines gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION of a work known for its fine colour-printed plates with exceptional hand-finishing. Elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1833, Shaw went to great lengths to achieve the highest standards of colour reproduction. 'His reproductions of medieval and Renaissance artefacts and manuscripts established standards of finish, colour, and form that the originals themselves had to match to satisfy Victorian taste' (ODNB).
