SHAW, George Bernard (1856-1950). Autograph letter signed ("G.Bernard Shaw"), to T.E. Lawrence ("My dear Lawrence [to drop ceremony]"), Godalming, 25 August 1922. 1 full page, pale green stationery. SHAW ON 'SEVEN PILLARS': "ANY PUBLISHER WOULD JUMP AT YOUR BOOK ON ARABIA". "First, business ," Shaw begins, "as if I were your solicitor. There is not the smallest doubt that any publisher would jump at your book on Arabia; and that there is no doubt at all that the book, having forced itself from you, will be published with whatever imperfections its mortal lot may involve, whether you like it or not. May I suggest Constables? You may as well make your mind to it. Second, as man to man. It will be pure waste of your time for me to read your book before you send it to press, but it would not waste mine, as I shall read it sooner or later. But at this moment I am at the Fabian Summer School...So will you let the reading stand over...?" He invites Lawrence to visit him and his wife in the country later: "You need not stand on any ceremony with us. You are a privileged soul, and can deal with both of us as with old friends."
