(Lightly washed and pressed, preliminaries [quires A 6 * 4] supplied from one or more copies and extended at lower margins, 'To the Reader' verses on A1v inlaid and with the first two words of the last two lines in facsimile, title restored at upper margin and affected by residual soiling, S3-4 restored at outer margin, S4 and V5 short at lower margin and possibly supplied, burn-holes slightly affecting text in A3, bb5, c3, e3, i1 and ee4, one word on p3r affected by rust mark, paper fault in zz6 affecting a few letters, bbb1 to end supplied from another copy and remargined, final leaf with heavy residual soiling and crease marks.) Red morocco gilt by F. Bedford, covers with triple fillets and saw-tooth roll, spine compartments directly lettered and with repeated flower-and-crown ornament, gilt floral turn-ins (slight scuff marks to covers, joints and corners rubbed). Provenance : occasional manuscript corrections -- Joseph Harrison of Samlesbury Hall, Lancashire -- Paulin Martin, Abingdon (bookplate, dated 24 November 1882 in manuscript, with his note of purchase from Sotheran's and of earlier provenance on front free endpaper) -- [B. Quaritch (collation note on rear endpaper)]. A TALL COPY OF THE SECOND FOLIO. First issue, second state of the imprint, and third setting of the Effigies leaf. While essentially a page-for-page reprint of the first folio, the second edition is celebrated for its inclusion of Milton's 'An Epitaph on the admirable Dramaticke Poet, W. Shakespeare' -- the first appearance in print of any work by Milton. Gregg notes that, 'though many errors were introduced in the course of reprinting, the text of the present edition shows signs of careful, if unauthorised, revision.' This copy is significantly taller than the Foyle copy (304mm), sold by Christie's, London, 13 July 2000, lot 454, and also taller than the Berland copy (330mm.) in 18th-century calf, sold by Christie's, New York, 8 October 2001, lot 101.
