Beschreibung:

SEUTTER, Georg Matthäus (1678-1757). Atlas Novus sive tabulae geographicae totius orbis faciem . Augsburg: [ca.1735]. 2° (545 x 315mm). Hand-coloured engraved title, 4pp letterpress geographical description with engraved headpiece, and pasted-on engraved index at foot of final page, 29 hand-coloured maps, all double-page. (Tears to the folds of many maps.) Contemporary wallet-style limp travelling calf, upper cover with original blindstamp 'Atlas Novus XXX: Mappar: a Matt: Seutter S.C.M. Geogr: Aug: Vindel:' (sections of flap and small sections of spine torn away, some scuffing, stitching weak). A fine edition of Seutter's first atlas; the first edition (with 16 maps) was published in 1720. The 30 maps described on the cover of the binding include the engraved title as per the listing in the engraved index. The maps include the World, Europe, Asia, Africa and America, maps of all the countries of Europe, and a map of the Holy Land. The number of maps in each atlas was variable according to the wishes (and depth of pocket) of the purchaser; the present example has an index for 49 maps beneath the pasted-on index. Seutter was apprenticed to J. B. Homann in 1687 in Nuremberg, then worked as an engraver for the publisher J. Wolff in Augsburg, before setting up his own map and globe business in the same city.
